Purpose: This data set was designed for large-scale (1:500,000 or smaller) analyses of relations between metropolitan areas and other landscape characteristics. This data set was created for use in the national analysis of ground-water quality data of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) VOC National Synthesis Team. Supplemental_Information: REVIEWS APPLIED TO DATA This electronic report was subjected to the same review standard that applies to all U.S. Geological Survey reports. Reviewers were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers checked the metadata and a_readme.1st files for completeness and accuracy. The objectives of the NAWQA Program are to: (1) describe current water-quality conditions for a large part of the Nation's freshwater streams, rivers, and aquifers, (2) describe how water quality is changing over time, and (3) improve the understanding of the primary natural and anthropogenic factors that affect water-quality conditions. National analysis of data, based on aggregation of comparable information obtained from across the United States, is a major component of the NAWQA Program. These data sets were created in support of NAWQA national data analysis activities. Process_Step: Process_Description: ARC/INFO software and commands (ESRI, 1995) were used to create this data set. ARC/INFO commands and modules are shown below in capital letters. Step 1. The U.S. counties data set (1:2 million scale) from the U.S. Geological Survey Digital Line Graph (DLG) data base (USGS/WRD version: http://water.usgs.gov/lookup/getspatial?county2m) was aggregated into MSAs and CMSAs using the list of counties and metro areas file "cof01.dat" from the U.S. Bureau of the Census County and City Data Book CD-ROM (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1995). Metro area names and 1992 population also were pulled from this data file. Step 2. A grid of metropolitan areas was created by relating the county coverage to the cof01.dat data table and using the item CYCICODE from the related table as a grid item. This metropolitan area grid was created to be coincident with the CIESIN population grid (Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network, 1996) which was used to reselect out "populated areas." The CIESIN population grid was prepared using data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census STF3A files. Step 3. The CIESIN population grid (1996) of persons per square kilometer was used to reselect out all areas of the metropolitan area grid that were "residential areas," that is, all areas where population was greater than 50 persons per square kilometer (see Hitt, 1994). Step 4. The ARC/INFO GRID REGIONGROUP() function was used to group each contiguous metropolitan zone, and then areas were calculated with ZONALSTATS. Then INFO was used to tag the largest contiguous zone of populated land in the VAT of the contiguous zone grid. Finally, SELECT() was used to select the largest contiguous zone and output it to the final grid. Step 5. The metropolitan area grid was converted to a polygon coverage using the GRIDPOLY command; items from the metro areas from the County/City Data Book described above were joined to the metropolitan area coverage's polygon attribute table. Step 6. Internal polygons ("doughnut-hole" polygons) in the metro coverage were removed using the ARC ELIMINATE command with the following select expression: > RESELECT GRID-CODE < 0 AND AREA > 0 Process_Date: 19951023 Spatial_Data_Organization_Information: Direct_Spatial_Reference_Method: Vector Point_and_Vector_Object_Information: SDTS_Terms_Description: SDTS_Point_and_Vector_Object_Type: Point Point_and_Vector_Object_Count: 266 SDTS_Terms_Description: SDTS_Point_and_Vector_Object_Type: String Point_and_Vector_Object_Count: 364 SDTS_Terms_Description: SDTS_Point_and_Vector_Object_Type: GT-polygon composed of chains Point_and_Vector_Object_Count: 267 Spatial_Reference_Information: Horizontal_Coordinate_System_Definition: Planar: Map_Projection: Map_Projection_Name: Albers Conical Equal Area Albers_Conical_Equal_Area: Standard_Parallel: 29.5 Standard_Parallel: 45.5 Longitude_of_Central_Meridian: -96 Latitude_of_Projection_Origin: 23 False_Easting: 0.00000 False_Northing: 0.00000 Planar_Coordinate_Information: Planar_Coordinate_Encoding_Method: coordinate pair Coordinate_Representation: Abscissa_Resolution: 441.8791503906 Ordinate_Resolution: 441.8791503906 Planar_Distance_Units: METERS Geodetic_Model: Horizontal_Datum_Name: North American Datum of 1927 Ellipsoid_Name: Clarke 1866 Semi-major_Axis: 6378206.4 Denominator_of_Flattening_Ratio: 294.98 Entity_and_Attribute_Information: Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: There is a polygon attribute table associated with this file: METROPOP.PAT: >COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME > 1 AREA 4 12 F 3 > 5 PERIMETER 4 12 F 3 > 9 METROPOP# 4 5 B - > 13 METROPOP-ID 4 5 B - > 17 CYCICODE 4 4 C - METRO > 21 CODE 4 5 B - > 25 AREANAME 60 60 C - AN > 85 AREANAME2 60 60 C - > 145 POP60 8 10 F 0 > 153 POP70 8 10 F 0 > 161 POP80 8 10 F 0 > 169 POP90 8 10 F 0 > 177 POP92 8 10 F 0 AREA is the area of the polygon in square meters PERIMETER is the perimeter of the polygon in meters METROPOP# is a program-generated feature identity number METROPOP-ID is a user-assigned feature identity number CYCICODE is a code number identifying a metropolitan area from the County and City Data Book (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1995). AREANAME is the name of the metropolitan area from the County and City Data Book (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1995). AREANAME2 is AREANAME modified to exclude labelling for metropolitan statistical area (more useful for labeling the areas on a map).
